The Iroquois (Peoples of America)

A great introduction
An Island Sheltered: Shelter Island Celebrates 350 Years
Published in Hardcover by Bright Sky Press (January, 1903)
Average review score:

great pictures! This book is really interresting. I am from the Island, so I can add to some of the info. I think it is missing a lot of really important land marks though. I know for a fact of at least 3 buildings in the Heights that should be noted and weren't even mentioned. Some of which are over 100 years old! All in all, it's an interresting book, but needs some more beefing up.

Islands of the Mid-Maine Coast: Pemaquid Point to the Kennebec River
Published in Hardcover by Tilbury House Publishers (March, 1995)
Average review score:

Ah View !The crisp blue waters that fill the pale seaweed laden rocks of the Maine coast are simply breathtaking. This book is yet another example of how words just can't do justice. The area covered in this title is some of the hardest to write about without relying on amazing facts of the historical importance of the Maine coastline, yet the author does an outstanding job of putting the historical, artistic and wildlife qualities into context. As a guide for the area and for pleasure reading, this book has exemplary qualities to keep you interested from front cover to the last page. The one shortfall that I found was there wasn't enough of it, which is probably good since the point of the book is for you get out and see this "Gods Country" for yourself! Overall I can completely recommend this book if you are a "Mainiac," or just on vacation in this part of the world (believe me you'll feel like you're out of the USA). Read it, love it, put it down and experience it !

Italian-Americans In Rhode Island
Published in Paperback by Arcadia Tempus Publishing Group, Inc. (01 November, 1995)
Average review score:

Italian-Americans in RIThis book provides a lovely pictoral of early Italian settlers' journey to RI and the beautiful world they created once here. This book will thrill anyone, especially Italian Americans who want to see and read about their beginnings. I was happy to see many of my relatives and their friends as they were when they were young starting out as laborers, grocery owners, and politicians. Readers will gain an appreciation for the life of these early RI Italians and the great strides they and their children have made in the 20th Century.

King of the Delawares: Teedyuscung, 1700-1763 (The Iroquois and Their Neighbors)
Published in Paperback by Syracuse University Press (December, 1990)
Average review score:

King of the Delawares: TeedyuscungAnthony F. C. Wallace, like his father, Paul A. W. Wallace, is an acknowledged authority on the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, and this book is one of his finest. It tells the story of the enigmatic Teedyuscung fairly, accurately, and (at times) grippingly.
Interestingly, the flow of the book reflects the uneven, back-and-forth fortunes of Teedyuscung and his people in eighteenth century America, which can be somewhat dizzying for some readers. But it is well worth the effort, and the persevering reader will be rewarded.
The maps that are included in the volume are so helpful that one might wish there were more, but that fault is easily overlooked.

Las Vegas Guide, 6th Edition
Published in Paperback by Open Road Pub (01 June, 2001)
Average review score:

Las Vegas GuideThis was a comprehensive look into Las Vegas for the average traveler. This book was very good at pointing out various hotspots and steering the reader clear of tourist traps. The one fault of this publication was that it contains no pictures of the area and only text and a few maps. Pictures would have enhanced the purpose of the travel guide by giving the reader visual cues to the Las Vegas when actually in the city.

Life and Death in Mohawk Country
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (September, 1993)
Average review score:

An important book about modern Mohawk politics. As someone who has experienced many of the events depicted in this book, I was very impressed with Johansen's take on a very confusing time in our history. Unlike others who have taken on the subject, he saw through the rhetoric and presented a straight-forward analysis of the Mohawk civil unrest of 1989-1990. Unfortunately, I do not agree that these conflicts are ultimately the fault of industrial polluters who forced Mohawks into smuggling and gambling operations. Individual greed, cultural assimilation, and personal conflicts were just as much to blame. Some might accuse Johansen from being biased toward the anti-gambling faction and "conservative" traditionalists. I also found the book somewhat "distant," as if it happened a hundred years ago, while memories of these very turbulent events are still very much alive to myself and other Mohawks. It is based mainly on newspaper accounts and documents, not on contemporary interviews. I guess we will have to write our own book on the subject to really capture the essence of what it was really like.

MARTHA'S VINEYARD
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (May, 1994)
Average review score:

Color Photography and Scenery is Fantastic!I recently visted Martha's Vineyard and wanted something to share with friends and family that would be as vivid as my memories of the homes and scenery I experienced on my visit to the Island. This book was it! The author and photographer not only captured the color, texture and scenery of the Island but the history and ambiance as well. A perfect memory of a beautiful stay to share with friends and family. P.S. I only wish Jackie O's house was included.
The history of the Iroquois is well covered in summary form from their first contacts with the French and the Dutch through to recent confrontations on reserves and reservations in Quebec and New York.
A fine book as an introduction to the Iroquois people which has served to whet my appetite for more info. Fortunately Snow has included a suggested list for further reading!
